Design Guidelines
Naming
 | The main page in each directory should be named
index.htm. This is the default page on our webserver. This will help
others who may want to link to your page. |
 | The ".htm" should be the extension used
on all pages. |
 | The name of each file (both webpage and graphic
files) should be subject-specific. |
Appearance
 | Use the "BRF"
theme and the appropriate template for each page. The template
offers a great deal of navigation ease, and it helps all the pages
at our site look like they belong to our site. What goes in the content area of
the page is up to the user, as long as the background stays white
and the text conforms to the "BRF" theme. |
 | Consider the size of your pictures—both file size
and dimensions. Pictures that are too large can be very slow to
download for many of our visitors. |
 | When setting up tables in your pages, use
percentages in determining size, not pixels. This will help make our
pages more liquid, since many of our visitors are using higher
screen resolutions than 800x600. |
Browsers
 | Not all of the features available in FrontPage can
be used by all browsers. Most fancy features require the latest
browsers and a fast computer. All efforts should be made to avoid a
browser specific design. |
 | Java should be kept to a minimum. This programming
language slows down the server and the viewing of the web pages.
Most everything that is done by Java can be accomplished another
way. |
 | Remember that we should not only provide content
and information,
but also create a site that people will want to visit more than
once. We can do that by providing up-to-date information and
interesting content. |
Directory organization
 | Keep all images in a directory or folder called
"images." All .htm files are to remain outside that
directory. |
 | Delete all old, unused files, be they web pages,
pictures or other files. |
