Welcome to 21st Century World! I'm glad you decided to enroll in this class. This blog with serve as a communication link between you and me that will help us operate in a more blended learning environment -- traditiional classroom and virtual.
I will post a new blog for each unit of study and will update things as we go along -- you need to be DISCIPLINED about checking the blog each week. With our new schedule, this becomes especially important.
OUR FIRST UNIT: "AMERICAN FOREIGN POLICY: CHALLENGES AND SETTING"
You will note that we will be on this unit of study for the first 3 weeks of class (roughly). Here are some immediate tasks for you:
1. Secure a 3-ring binder for organizing your materials
2. Return the signed parent letter
3. Read "Reflective Engagement" and "How to Read Better" (both on-line)
4. Read Gateway Lecture #1 (by Monday 9.10)
5. Read "How Foreign Policy is Made" (you will receive this in hard-copy)
6. Start working on Reading Analysis #1 (note syllabus)
7. Explore what nation you will study for completing the Hovde Project (listen for details on that)
UNIT 1 POLITICAL CARTOONS
We will use cartoons throughout the semester as a way of understanding issues related to the role of the US in the international community.
#1: The Debate Over Global Warming
#2: The Challenge of Afghanistan
AS WE GET INTO WEEK 2! (week of 9.10.12) Here are some things to keep in mind!
We will meet 3 times this week with a late start on Friday. You have work due on Friday (the first READING ANALYSIS). We will be talking about that in class. YOU ALSO WILL BE CHOOSING YOUR NATION for the Hovde Project this week -- that's the Nation Study.
HERE'S ANOTHER THING: IF YOU ARE ABSENT!!!!! You will notice a wooden holder outside my door with 3 folders in it. If you are gone, check the folder for your class the day you get back -- if you have missed receiving anything from me (handouts), check that folder! OTHER THAN THAT, the BLOG will be a key thing if you are absent -- it will help you know where we are!
FRIDAY 9.14
Today in class we followed up on the Libyan story and the death of the American ambassador. In addition I did some direct instruction on the topic of US Foreign Policy -- what is it and what are the objectives of our foreign policy. This involved quite a bit of discussion with relevant examples from current news. You will need to get a few notes related to that. 1 additional handout -- check the folder! Students also were assigned their nation for the Hovde Project.
TUESDAY 9.18
First test was today -- based on information covered in our first several class periods. We also watched BBC news (story about Syria). After the test, we worked on our Nation Study Projects. Let the work begin!
THURSDAY 9.20
I handed tests back and you now have 2 grades for the class. Privilege grades will be posted on Monday. We completed INTRODUCTORY MATERIAL for the study of foreign policy related to the Definition, Goals, Instruments, and Dilemmas of foreign policy and the US foreign policy STYLE. New student joined the class today: WELCOME TO Nichelle Palmer!
LOOK FOR THE UNIT 2 BLOG -- WE WILL GET STARTED WITH THAT ON MONDAY!
