December 1: Safety Patrol

December 1, 2017

Hello, Black River Falls Community!  This is Dr. Shelly Severson, with the School District of Black River Falls, here to share this week’s installment of our Spotlight on Schools!  Today I am thrilled to have some guests here in the studio with me; I am joined by the Safety Patrol Captains from Red Creek Elementary School.  They are going to share some of the highlights of their work with us.  I’d like to first start by having them introduce themselves: Joining me is Reese Cowley, Ari Rukavina, Rylea Lindow, and Lily Olson.

  1. Can you explain what Safety Patrol is? (Ari)

Safety Patrol is a program that has a goal to help keep all students safe. Our role is to help model the Tiger Way. When we are on patrol, our goal is to help students be happy at school. We do this by greeting them and acknowledging when they show positive behaviors. Our Safety Patrol even came up with the idea of rewarding these positive behaviors with yellow Safety Patrol Tiger Tickets. Together, the Safety Patrol team helps to keep the school a positive and safe place to learn.

We also memorized the Safety Patrol Pledge: (Everyone)

I promise to do my best to...

Report for duty on time
Perform my duties faithfully
Report dangerous student practices
Obey my teachers and officers of the patrol
Strive to earn the respect of fellow students
Strive to prevent traffic crashes by always setting a good example myself.

2. Where are the Safety Patrol posts at Red Creek? (Lily)

In the morning, you will see Safety Patrol opening car doors and greeting students as they get out of their cars at the parent drop off. Here the Patrollers also try to encourage the cars to always move forward before dropping their child off. They are also by the buses to greet the students as they get off the buses. They monitor the cubby areas and help in the cafeteria. In the mornings, they are also on the playground to help students.

At lunchtime, you will see the Safety Patrol in the cafeteria by the garbage cans and by the window where students stack their trays. They also are at their post by the windows to support students in walking out to recess.

At the end of the day, the Safety Patrol monitor the Grand Staircase and hallways as students leave for the day. There are Safety Patrollers at the Parent Pick-up area that help students and parents get to their cars. For the students that ride the bus, there are Safety Patrollers lining the path to the buses...always trying to catch students showing the Tiger Way.

3. What do the students at Red Creek say about the Safety Patrol? (Rylea)

We asked the students at our school “What is Safety Patrol?” and these are some of their answers:

  • Safety Patrol are people that help.

  • They protect kids from getting hurt and making sure they’re doing the right thing.

  • I think safety patrol is about keeping people safe.

  • They are people around the school that help me like the aides.

  • Safety patrol are kids that help out when you need it.

4. How does the Safety Patrol make kids feel at Red Creek? (Reese)

Students shared lots of great comments like:

  • They make me feel safe because they are always there.

  • They make me feel comfortable because they are always helping.

  • They make me feel safe because bullies don’t pick on me.

  • Safety Patrol makes me feel happy so kids don’t have to get hurt when teachers aren’t watching.

  • I haven’t needed help, but I have seen them help others.

  • They make me feel safer so kids don’t get in fights because there aren’t enough teachers to see what every kid is doing.

  • They make me feel safer because they are like mini teachers.

As always, thank you so much for your support of the School District of Black River Falls!  If you have any questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to contact me!  Let’s show our Tiger Pride in all that we do!
