Introduction

This portfolio is presented as a snapshot of my efforts to build and maintain  effective  elementary library media programs.

For nine years I have had the honor of being a library media specialist and seeing the empowerment students experience in using the library.  I work as an elementary media specialist and currently have two K-5 elementary schools.

Libraries have always been a powerful influence in my life, as a youngster the highlight of the week was to go to the local small town library to check out books.  When I started school, most of my school reading was textbook oriented as elementary libraries were not available.  Fortunately, I came from a family where reading was important; daily newspapers, periodicals, encyclopedias, almanacs and books were always in my home.

As an elementary media specialist, my goal is to bring the experience of the literate world to students so they can become higher level thinkers, problem solvers, communicators, knowledge constructors, independent learners and pleasure readers. When students walk thru the library media center door I want them to realize that the world is at their disposal, whether it be in printed, electronic or personal format.  Personal format meaning doors being opened to them by the media specialist, teachers, staff and fellow classmates. Electronic format meaning technology and computers, library media centers are not "just books".

The foundation of our strong, democratic nation rests upon equal access to, and utilization of resources. An effective library media program is critical in supporting that democratic principle.
