APE Community Activities

Along with following the curriculum for physical education, APE students in the BRF school district have the unique opportunity to participating in many community-related field trips.  One goal for all APE students is to have an understanding of how and where to recreate within the Black River Falls community and surrounding areas.  The field trips are based on personal interests, goals, and family involvement.  The more exposure to the recreational events, the more active our students can stay – in and out of school.  The following are some pictures from some of our trips.

Handcycle – In the spring of 2006, Lisa Mathson of the La Crosse YWCA brought a handcycle for the APE students to ride.  This bike is adapted to allow individuals with balance and strength needs enjoy the freedom of riding a bike in a safe environment. This is a unique bike in which the hands are used to pedal and steer.

Horseback Riding – For the last 3 years, out APE students have traveled south of Sparta to go horseback riding at the scenic Red Rock Trails.  The whole group enjoys a picnic on the beautiful countryside and take turns riding a led horse.  For more information about Red Rock Trials, call Kathy Sullivan at 608-823-7865.

Bowling –  Bowling is another opportunity for community recreation and leisure.  All APE students practice their approach steps, line up their shots, and “strike” poses.  This trip is also a great way to integrate classroom instruction into a culminating event in the community.

Swimming – As part of the APE program in BRF, all students take part in many swimming lesson at the Lunda Community Pool.  The objective of these trips focus on water safety, stroke introduction, stroke refinement, and water exploration.  The pool offers an environment that allows all students to succeed and have fun.
