FALLS HISTORY PROJECT 2003

Our focus during the 2002-03 school year was on Black River Falls in the 1930s.  Kristen Boehm, our senior intern, conducted several interviews with people who went to school in Black River or lived in the area during the Great Depression.

Ozzy attended Carroll College after graduating from BRFHS and recounted his chance meeting with Governor Franklin Roosevelt in 1931!  How many people are still around that can say they met FDR before he was President?

Osborne "Ozzy" Moe graduated from Black River Falls High School in 1931.  His father, Peter Moe, started a hardware store in the Falls in the 1890s.  Ozzy was born in 1912 and recounted several great stories about his early years, including a vivid memory of the Armistice Day celebration in the city on November 11, 1918.

Robert Pratt was born in 1914 in Black River Falls.   His father, William Pratt, operated a bakery and dry goods store on main street while Bob was growing up.  Bob spent the depression years working at his father's store.

Bob played in the first organized band at Black River Falls High School in 1929. The picture to the right is of Bob and four of his friends who played in a quartet in 1930.  From left to right:  Bob Pratt, Art Larson, Walt Ristow, and Elmo Johnson.

Lillian recalls attending the teacher training institute held at the Union School.

Lillian McManners was born and raised in rural Jackson County and graduated from Osseo High School in the mid-1930s.  She began teaching in one-room school houses in 1937 after receiving one year of teacher training in Black River Falls. Lillian eventually taught in Black River Falls until she retired in 1978.

Kristen engaged George in an hour-long interview that spanned much of the 20th century!  It is not often that we meet someone who was born in a log cabin!

George Brudos was born in 1904 in Crawford County, Wisconsin.  He recounted for us in amazing detail stories of growing up in rural Wisconsin during the early years of this century. George attended high school in La Crosse and was a sprinter on the track team.  He graduated in 1922.
