THE FALLS HISTORY PROJECT  2004

"BLACK RIVER FALLS 1952"

The decade of the 1950s is a rich and complex period of American history.  Though often depicted as a quiet and "boring" period of time, the 50s provide any serious student of history with a myriad of sources for understanding later decades of the American past.

In the 2004 version of the Falls History Project, we are exploring Black River Falls in the year 1952.  Our special focus is on the high school and the lives of young people during that period.  What was it like to be in high school in the early 1950s?  We are interviewing people who were students at that time and also one former teacher and coach.  The above photograph is a picture of the high school in the early 1950s.  The building today is Third Street Elementary.

Janet Hoffman Krohn tried to give us a sense of the attitudes of early 1950s youth.

Gene Krohn recounted many stories about BRFHS athletics from the early 1950s.

Dick Faldet spoke with great enthusiasm about the 1952 basketball season!

Basil Holder offered tremendous insight on what it was like to grow up in the 1940s.

Sam Young came to Black River Falls in 1949 and was in his 2nd season as the varsity basketball coach in 1952.  The photo above is a picture of that team.  Can you locate some of our interviewees?

Here is the "young" Coach Young that was working with Basil, Dick, Gene, and many others during those years!

Our 2004 intern, Jill Janke, interviewed the legendary Coach Young and learned a great deal about Black River athletics from fifty years ago!
