LAW and SOCIETY

Term 2         2008-09

Law and Society is a one term elective that explores Constitutional and Criminal Law and how legal issues surround us on a daily basis.  Regional legal professionals visit with our classes to help students understand the day to day workings of the system.  We recently had a visit from Bill Poss, State Public Defender.  He introduced us to the the concept of due process.

BONUS ACTIVITY RELATED TO RELIGIOUS FREEDOM

The Neumann Case

PROMPT
What you are reading here is Judge Howard's ruling in the Neumann Case from Marathon County.  Agree or Disagree with the following premise:

"The defendants in this case should not be tried for 2nd degree reckless homicide."

Your response should be 250 words and I expect to see legal reasoning (beyond simply your opinion) in your essay.  You need to prove to me that you have actually read the ruling. I will accept this bonus work through 9 January!

MEET OUR GUIDE

In December we visited the Jackson County Circuit Court and Judge Lister.  Some of our students got a chance to be a "court reporter" for a few moments (upper right).  We also recently spent time with Judge Amanda Rockman of the HoChunk Nation (below and left).  We learned about tribal sovereignty and the HoChunk legal system.
