September 2008
Academics, Careers and Character
We are off to a great start to the school year! I
would like to thank the entire faculty and staff at the high
school for helping our students make a quick and smooth
transition from the summer break back into our exciting school
year.
The new freshmen appear to
have truly benefited from their first day with the Link Leaders
and their high energy. Welcome to the home of the Tigers. I’ve
talked with a number of freshmen students who were very happy to
have the time to get to know some upperclassmen, take a tour of
the building and find their classrooms--and to just have a
little fun getting rid of the first day jitters at the high
school. Thanks, Link Leaders and coordinators, Ms. Leadholm and
Ms. Marshall.
For the upperclassmen, the
first day started off with a nice transition program as well.
They all met with their faculty adviser, spent time looking over
their schedules, their transcripts, their plans for the future
and reading an excerpt from the inspirational “The
Last Lecture.” During that first morning and then during
focus time the following two days, faculty also met one-on-one
for 10-20 minutes with each of their “advisees” to check in
on them and discuss classes, plans for the future and questions
or concerns they may have. They also reminded them of the
support programs and personnel we have at their service.
Our spotlight this year will
be on Academics, Careers and Character.
If you re-read the above paragraphs, you’ll see how the things
we started with fit right in with those topics. As we proceed
through the year, the advising (which happens every second
Friday of the month on our Late Start days) will continue to be
an opportunity for students to discuss their classes, goals, and
any issues they are comfortable discussing with a caring adult.
Our Link Crew is working one a week with the freshmen during a
focus class time to provide them tips, skills and insight into
how they can be more comfortable, more confident and more
successful at BRFHS.
We’ve already seen results
from the focus on character, too. Our cheerleaders this fall,
lead by Ms. Boehm, have really turned up the spirit in school
and on the football field. They have new cheers and crowd
participation routines--and they have even taught the staff some
cheers! Our cross country coaches, Mr. Rykken and Mr. Markee,
have woven character building into their team meetings and
practices; they have also created display boards in school to
communicate these important traits of responsibility, tenacity
and follow-through.
Our athletics teams are
working very hard this fall and despite some difficult losses,
unfortunate injuries and nasty weather, have come up with a few
spectacular upset wins and fine showings against tough teams.
The new tennis courts are not only playing host to a strong
group of athletes, we have also been chosen to host the Coulee
Conference Championship this year – it’s great to have
excellent facilities.
We all know that fall means
football and football in
Black River
Falls
means homecoming. Homecoming
means a lot of activities. Throughout the district we are in
full swing planning for this year’s events. The game is
Friday, October 3; the dance will be on Saturday, October 4 from
8:00–11:00 p.m.
The faculty at the high
school is excited about the traditions, the excitement and the
spirit of homecoming. We are at the same time concerned that
this spirit does not turn to mean-spirited or destructive
activities. As we did last year, we are asking that any
community members who experience paper product “decorations”
of their property, to contact the school for assistance in
cleaning up the T.P. The
dance will be canceled if there is destruction to property or if
the students do not have properties cleaned up by
noon
on Saturday.
We look forward to an
exciting, fun and safe homecoming week with a strong win in our
football game against Westby. Go Tigers!
