Samantha Barnum

senior

“It’s been quite an experience. It is really not what I expected, especially with SRL. It definitely was challenging, but in a good way. I never thought I would be interested in journalism, but after taking this class, it sort of sparked my interest in it.”

GM97 Video Announcements

GM97 is an extra curricular project; students are assigned to a special focus after auditioning for a spot. The next auditions will open in Fall 2014.

NewsHour Interview

One-to-One

When it comes to student media, we offer a lot of opportunity for a school our size.

Writing 1: SRL/News

This is the class that publishes the Paw Print Online newspaper and acts as a PBS NewsHour Student Reporting Lab. Students write researched news, persuasive and narrative articles. They get the opportunity to interview a wide variety of people and research interesting topics. The work staffers publish gets school, community and national exposure. The national exposure comes through its partnership with PBS NewsHour as a Student Reporting Lab. Student work has the potential to be shown on the the NewsHour's national evening news program.

Prerequisite: English 9
Grades 10-12
Two semesters

Writing 1: Yearbook

This is the class that publishes the Breeze yearbook. Students get the opportunity to interview a wide variety of people and research school-based topics. In the end, they'll understand the rush of cracking open that first yearbook and seeing your work in print.

Prerequisite: English 9
Grades 10-12
Two semesters

Writing 2

Writing 2 is a continuation of Writing 1. Students work on specialized topics, act as editors and select what publication they'd like to work on. This class is like choir or band--students can take it over and over again.

Prerequisite: English 9 and Writing 1
Grades 10-12
Two semesters

Video Audio Productions 1

This fast-paced and fun course challenges students to become part of the team that produces content for a newscast and creates PSAs. Students learn the basics of digital video editing and explore the use of digital sound and video to create interesting stories and messages.

Grades 10-12
One semester

Video Audio Productions 2

This is an extension of Video Audio Productions 1. Students work on their skills in a variety of projects that change from semester to semester.
