Hello Black River Falls community!  This is Dr. Shelly Severson, Superintendent of the SDBRF, and I’m here to share this weeks’ Spotlight on Schools.  This week I’d like to share with you some of the feedback that the community shared with us through our comprehensive community feedback survey that we sent out last spring.  We really appreciate so many people investing the time and effort to give us this feedback! We will use this information to inform our next five year strategic plan!

We know that communication is one of the biggest challenges to most organizations, and ours is no different.  Our goal is to always make sure people have access to the information that they need, while also knowing how to access any other information that they may be interested in.  We found out that 85% of the respondents rated our communication as effective to extremely effective.

One of our critical responsibilities is to prepare our students for life after high school and the future workforce. With the assistance of our Business Partnership Committee, we have drastically increased the number of career exploration activities and events, job site placements for our seniors, as well as students earning industry credentials while still in high school. 98% of our respondents said that they believe it is critical work and that they see value in this type of programming.  This was great affirmation as we have recently invested a lot of time and energy into this area!

Knowing that community engagement is one of our top priorities, we asked what type of engagement opportunities people thought we should continue to foster and grow, and were told that increasing the opportunities for volunteerism should be a top priority - can do!  Watch for more information to come on this one!

The community has invested in our facilities through past referendum and many significant donations.  We asked if people felt that the District took pride in its facilities, as evidenced by our ongoing maintenance efforts, and were pleased to see that just under 90% of the community agreed with this!  Over half of the respondents felt that their home value was positively impacted by the quality of our District.

We asked questions around each of the four pillars of our strategic plan, looking for key words or phrases that people would like to see included.  We also asked if the values that were identified four years ago still resonated with the community. We’ll go through each one of those pillars in a future Spotlight.  I will end with this last nugget; as you hopefully know, our District motto is Inspiring Excellence. We asked the community if they believed we had a reputation for excellence within our community and 75% of the respondents agreed or strongly agreed!  Our goal is to bring that up to 100%!

As always, I’d like to end by sharing some feedback from one of our parent surveys.  Today we are going to highlight Ms. Emily Stewart who teaches second grade at Red Creek school.  “Ms. Stewart is a rising star at Red Creek. Her smile and attitude is infectious. Her love of children is very appreciated. She is a great asset to our school district.”  We couldn’t agree more! Ms. Stewart is a Black River Falls alumni and we are thrilled that she was interested in coming back to help our community thrive!

As always, if you have any questions about this, or anything else within the District, please don’t hesitate to reach out!  Thanks for all you do to support our students and show your Tiger Pride in all that you do!
