Hello Black River Falls community!  This is Dr. Shelly Severson, Superintendent of the SDBRF, and I’m here to share this weeks’ Spotlight on Schools.  This week I’d like to highlight two separate topics, the first is the fact that it is School Board Appreciation Week, and the second is to highlight that this coming week our community will be celebrating Homecoming with a very special spin on the Homecoming football game.

First, let’s talk about the role that our School Board members play in our community; in BRF we have seven elected officials that must reside within the District boundaries.  They do not represent a specific township or section of the community, but are all at large members. The current Board members represent diverse backgrounds and community experiences.  Their views are often times extremely different, yet their discussions are always centered around what is best for our students. The Board is committed to making decisions based on the feedback that they receive from the community, they want to engage with as many stakeholders as possible and look forward to opportunities to have conversations about the great things we are doing, or to troubleshoot a challenge someone might be having.  Mary Jo Rozmenoski, the President of the Board has often said, “The Board is not here to run the District, but to ensure the District is run well.” That is a great summary of the role they play, they trust in the professionals, yet ask insightful questions to make sure we are all moving in the same direction! Serving the community as a Board member is not a glamorous job; regularly scheduled monthly meeting, committee meetings, sometimes special meetings are called, as well as participating in professional development with school board members from across the state.  I am appreciative of the commitment that our elected officials have made to continue to find ways that our schools can serve our community!

Now onto the excitement of Homecoming!  This week brings with it many time honored traditions within our community, including the Powder Puff football game, boys volleyball, hall decorating, spirit assembly, and the classic Homecoming Parade down mainstreet before the Tiger football game.  If you happen to be a football fan, you may have noticed that we are playing several schools that have not been on our calendar in recent years. The WIAA, Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association, continues to adjust the conferences for football only.  This year we added several schools, yet next year will be entering into a whole new conference as the WIAA realigns the Western side of the state again. What this DOES do for us, is match the BRF Tigers up against the Wisconsin Dells Chiefs for the Homecoming game!

Mr. Tony Boerger, Social Studies teacher at the HS, and Eli Youngthunder, who works with our Student Senate, are organizing a Ho- Chunk appreciation night as both of our Districts have the privilege of serving  Ho-Chunk students. There are some great events taking place and we really hope that you will be able to join us!

In addition to celebrating the Homecoming football game; there will be pre-game Double-Ball and Lacrosse games on the practice field, craft demonstrations, food, a flag song presentation and a dance exhibition at half-time.  This is a great way for both of our communities to showcase the significant cultural influences the Ho-Chunk tribe brings to our communities. We hope to see you there!

As always, I’d like to end this Spotlight by sharing with you some of the positive feedback that was shared with us from one of our parents last year during our survey.  This parent said, “I want to recognize Ms. Amy Tiedt as a fantastic 5th grade teacher. My daughter has come so far this school year thanks to Ms. Tiedt's guidance and encouragement. She is patient and kind and just an overall wonderful part of my daughter's educational journey. Thanks so much, Ms. Tiedt!!”  We are so pleased that this family appreciated all of the fabulous things that Ms. Tiedt has to offer, we are so glad that she is here!

As always, please contact me if you have any questions about this information, or anything else within the District.  We are looking forward to celebrating Homecoming week this coming week and can’t wait to see our whole community brimming with Tiger Pride!
