Hello Black River Falls community!  This is Dr. Shelly Severson, Superintendent of the SDBRF, and I’m here to share this weeks’ Spotlight on Schools.  This week I’d like to share with you a summary of the conversations and decisions that took place last Monday at the regularly scheduled Board of Education meeting.

The Board began by expressing its gratitude and appreciation to Brad and Ann Eberhardt for the donation of the batting cages that were added to the beautiful new Red Creek Softball Fields!  In addition to the financial donation, Brad spent countless hours overseeing the project and taking care of many of the final details. He put the finishing touches on an already incredible donation and made it even better!  It was a labor of love that will serve our community for many years into the future!

Marianne Torkelson presented to the Board some of the findings from the Community Day Care Task Force that has been operating in our community.  She shared that Jackson County is designated as a child care desert, due to the number of children that need care compared to the number of spots that are available.  The committee is made up of several community agencies and businesses and is working with state agencies to come up with as many different solutions to the problem as they can!

The District accepted a gift of a trumpet from Mr. Bill Rakestrow that will go to the MS band.  Additionally, the District received $35,834 in a Transition Readiness Grant that will be utilized to assist high school special education students as they transition into life after high school.    

The Annual Meeting is scheduled for Monday, October 28 beginning at 6:00 pm in the Board Room at the District Office.  All electors of the District are welcome to attend and vote on any of the resolutions.

There were two field trips approved, the first will happen in the summer of 2021. Sarah Halverson will be traveling to Italy and Greece with a group of students.  Mr. Markhardt will also be taking a group of FFA students to the National Convention in Indianapolis later this month!

The Board certified the tax levy and approved the budget modifications for the 2019-2020 school year.  The tax levy will remain exactly the same as it was last year, $8.98, this includes a defeasance as in the past years.  There were a few budget items approved. The first was an additional building aide at RC for 6.75 hrs per day. The second, there will be a full time School Counselor that will be shared between the MS and HS. The position will be posted asap and will begin working as soon as we can secure a top notch candidate!

An individual has made a request to purchase one of the parcels of land that is in the open lot adjacent to the DO, where Third Street School used to be.  The Board decided they wanted to have additional conversation about this lot and what they see as a viable future for it. The individual wanted to move the historic Locken House to the site.

District Admin Report:

Jen Dahl, our elementary art teacher,  has been invited to submit 24 ornaments that will be hung on the NATIONAL Christmas tree - WOW!  She is working with her students to try to get as many involved in the process, as well as to decorate them in ways that highlight our great state and region!

There is a Walk to School event taking place on October 30.  A combination of volunteers and school staff members will meet the kids at the District Office shortly after 7:00 am for a brief kick off, and then we'll all walk to Red Creek together!
