Hello Black River Falls community!  This is Dr. Shelly Severson, Superintendent of the SDBRF, and I’m here to share this weeks’ Spotlight on Schools.  This week I’d like to talk with you a little bit about our Fall Sports season that is wrapping up!

While there is a great deal that happens under the umbrella of the “work of schools”, and education is most definitely our primary objective, sometimes the extra opportunities outside of the classroom are what grab kid’s attention and engages them to work hard and be successful both in their sport AND in the classroom.

Jay Weinman, our new Activities Director,  is doing a fantastic job working with our student athletes, coaches, and families as he settles in to our community.  He has been meeting with groups of athletes during our Friday early releases to talk to them about leadership, serving our community, how they can build character in themselves as well as the students around them, etc.  All fantastic messages that kids can never hear too often!

The Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association, or the WIAA, has been revamping the conference alignments for football for several years.  If you were watching Tiger football this fall, you likely noted that we didn’t play an awful lot of teams that have traditionally been on our schedule. While it is disappointing to lose some of those relationships and friendly rivalries, we also found some success in our new opponents!  The team is still small in numbers, but mighty in spirit! Jeremiah Vangen, who teaches in the 8th grade, is the new Head Coach and repeatedly talks about how much he enjoys our student athletes and believes they are going to continue to grow and achieve!

Volleyball is coached by Amy Olson, who teaches Art at the MS, and coaches basketball, also shares that she has a fantastic group of athletes!  They brought home many Tiger victories, including a significant upset in the first round of the playoffs! We’ve heard from officials, that officiate their games, and they complement our students for their grit on the court, as well as their respectful attitudes toward all.  True sportsmanship!

Another team that really shined this fall was our girls golf team!  This is a program that continues to grow in participation and success!  Mary Danielson, a 4th grade teacher in the District, coaches the girls and thoroughly enjoys it!  This year the entire team qualified for sectionals - this is an outstanding achievement!

Some that I haven’t yet mentioned are cross country, swim team, and tennis. There are so many ways for our students to get involved, and the research on student success is so VERY clear!  Participation in athletics is on the decline in our Nation, as well as in BRF. I’m afraid that students who used to get involved for the social interactions may now be choosing to stay home and choose an electronic means of socializing.  My opinion is that they are truly missing the boat! We wish EVERY student had one sport, club, or activity that they felt passionately about! In our District, if there is an interest, there is typically a community group or organization to help support to make it happen.  One more reason we are blessed to call Black River Falls home!

As always, I’d like to share with you some of the positive feedback we’ve received from families in our surveys.  This parent wanted to highlight a fourth grade teacher at Red Creek.  “Mrs. Bluedorn is hands down a complete ROCK STAR! She has taken the time to advocate for our child and voice her concerns.  She is so friendly, helpful and our child really enjoys being in her class. Love that our child has a love for school, learning and looks forward to going to school each and every day!” I don’t know who this parent was, but I often use the term ROCK STAR to describe some of our fabulous staff and I would completely concur, Mrs. Bluedorn meets that level, day in and day out!

If you have any questions about any of this information, or anything else for that matter, please reach out and let me know!  Thank you for all you do to support our students and let’s continue showing our Tiger Pride in all that we do!
