On Friday, April 12th, twelve fifth graders travelled to UW-La Crosse to attend the Kid’s College event. Throughout the day, the students were able to attend several breakout sessions on topics of interest. The topics included robotics, art, archeology, history, recreation, and more! #tiGRRpride

The BRFHS Jazz Band will be performing Jazz @ Revolution on Wednesday, 4/17! They will be playing a variety of jazz styles to showcase what they have been working on this year!

Nįoxawanį Nąącge Waxopįnį~BRF Heart Spirits is a group committed to making a difference locally and in Wisconsin concerning the issue of MMIW and human trafficking in general. Last year, they collaborated with Canadian artist Cheryl Ring, the founder of the Heart Spirits art display in Saskatchewan. She traveled to Black River Falls to help with multiple workshops at the high school that involved students from the district, community members, and even Governor Tony Evers. The permanent display that is now housed in the high school commons is meant to be a constant reminder of those who have walked on or are currently missing from Wisconsin. Nįoxawanį Nąącge Waxopįnį~BRF Heart Spirits mission statement is as follows: We vow to raise awareness in our community about human trafficking and its impact on Indigenous people. Through art, we honor and dedicate our BRF Heart Spirits Project to focusing on our youth who have the power to make changes that are real, compassionate, and long-lasting. This spring, Heart Spirits has sponsored two community workshops. One was held at the Hub in the Lunda Community Center and one was held at Interfaith with the “A Time for Me” clients. Each workshop allowed community members to create clay hearts to be used for future displays. The BRF Middle School will proudly dedicate their Heart Spirits display on Thursday, May 2. There will be a FREE community dinner at 5pm with a guest speaker and heritage demonstrations to follow at 6 pm. The dinner will be in the Middle School commons with the guest speaker appearing in the Lunda Community theater. The Heart Spirits committee would like to extend an invitation to everyone in the community to be a part of this unveiling and unique event. On Friday, May 3, there will be a MMHR Awareness Walk. Registration will begin at the high school football field at noon. The walk will begin promptly at 12:30. Participating community members will join the high school students on their walk from the football field down Main Street to the foot of the bridge and then back again. On the day of the event, red ribbons will be posted along the walkway on signs and street lamps to symbolize solidarity for those that will be walking and with the passing vehicle traffic. This community event is designed to raise awareness about the national May 5 MMIW, but to focus on our Missing & Murdered Ho-Chunk Relatives more specifically. Walkers will be asked to focus on those who are no longer with us and honor them with their steps that are fueled by one common heart as the community walks together. One of the strongest and effective prevention methods for abuse, violence, addiction, and trafficking that we know is to build relationships with others. The community is urged to be a part of one or both of these events that will open the eyes of the heart. One voice, one heart. We CAN make a difference together. During the month leading up to the events on May 2 & 3, some downtown businesses will have red dresses on display with information for the public to learn about the tragic statistics that surround MMIW and what can be done to make a difference. Red dresses have become a national symbol of MMIW as a visual reminder of those that are no longer with us. During the week leading up to May 5, the national MMIW Day, some businesses will be offering special products focusing around the symbolic color of red that will also bring a greater awareness to the community. “This project is about women, but the scope goes beyond the female demographic. It is a general call to action, a subtle call to action. An invitation to view our world with softer eyes and kinder thoughts. As nuanced as it is a call to action is a gentle reminder to all women that we matter…What I know for sure is that missing and murdered Indigenous Women and Girls is not solely a First Nations issue, not just a women’s issue but a human one… and we all have to care about it.” ~Cheryl Ring, Heart Spirits founder and BRF High School guest artist

BRFHS FCCLA had a successful state conference. Madyson Schultz-state VP of finance helped lead the state conference and handed her position over to the newly elected officer, 20 individuals and two teams qualified for nationals in Seattle, WA in June.

Sending a big congratulations to Black River Falls High School students Sam Berra, Madyson Schultz, Kaylee Wood and Evi Bolger for their Upper Midwest Emmy Foundation Student Production Awards win! Their collaborative project in Arts & Entertainment/Cultural Affairs earned them a crystal pillar at the @MidwestEmmys Student Production Awards. We're also thrilled for Sam Berra, who received another crystal pillar for the Multimedia Journalist category! Our shooting Tigers compete no matter what mother nature decides to give us for weather. The shooting team competed in thier first conference shoot against Augusta High school and won by two targets overall and are 1-0. The Tigers trap conference consists of Augusta, Sparta, Westby, Alma Center, Blair-Talyor and Arcadia schools. #tiGRRpride
