It was a great month to be a 4th grade scientist. The Red Creek 4th graders just completed a unit on the "Human Machine." Over the course of 5 weeks, the students first learned about how their muscles contract and how the tendons help move the muscles. Next, they did 2 experiments to learn how the eyes work and learned the names of the parts of their eyes. From there, the students learned a bit about the brain, including sensory nerves and movement nerves. The final task was to take an animal, do a bit of research, and create a poster explaining how that animal's body helps it move and survive. The kids did an amazing job putting all their learning into the final project.
Here are a few samples.

Hello SDBRF community! Please see the information included on the photo below regarding an opportunity to both read a New York Times Best Selling book, and to also have an opportunity to visit with the author, Angeline Boulley, when she visits Black River Falls on February 1st! She is an enrolled member of the Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians and is a storyteller who writes about her Ojibwe community.
The District received Out of School Time Grant funds that have a short timeline and are intended to have an impact on our students, families, and the community! There was a small book club study of the book at the High School during the previous school year and it was so positively received that we have invited the author to come to BRF and hope that the goals and missions behind her work can also help grow our community. Angeline Boulley said, "I write to preserve my culture, and I edit to protect it." She further explained that when she is revising her manuscript, she knew to leave out information about ceremonies but there were cultural teachings that felt appropriate to the story. The story is classified as a mystery thriller and is engaging from the very onset!
Perhaps you recall our Heart Spirits project from last spring, this book also has a strong thread throughout of women protecting other women and girls that continues to develop as the story gets deeper.
Please click the link included to reserve a copy for you to read, or a couple of copies for your whole Book Club to enjoy! Once you fill out the form, we'll reach out to you when books are available and arrange for pick up. Please mark your calendar for Thursday, February 1st at 6:00 pm and join us at the Lunda Theater to meet with this esteemed and well recognized author!
We hope you'll join us either as an individual reader, or as an existing Book Club! Winter is the perfect time to curl up with an excellent book!

This trimester, Mr. Johnson's Careers class got the opportunity to practice interviewing with volunteers from different businesses in the area. It was a very valuable experience as these students transition to their work lives. Thank you to the volunteers that helped us out!

Veteran's Day Surprise: Veteran Betsy Thompson delivered a gift to one of our Red Creek students. What an awesome surprise!

Vincent Johnson is a local veteran and also is Evelyn's and Rivers' uncle. Both of these third graders are in Mrs. Kundinger's class so Mr. Johnson was kind enough to stop by the classroom after the Veterans Day Assembly. He showed the students some of the gear he needs to wear and let them try it out. The students also tried some applesauce cake from an MRE that he brought in. Thank you, Mr. Johnson, for sharing with us!

Congrats to Jacob Wortman, who won a Best of Pod award for this news package about students who balance extracurriculars with rigorous classes! Watch it now!
