The Black River Falls Tigers faced off against Aquinas on January 9, and while the JV team came up short, the varsity team delivered an exciting victory.
JV Game: The Tigers JV squad made a brave effort but ultimately fell to Aquinas 5-2. Huston Arnaud scored for BRF, assisted by Ben Bresee and Ryan Casper. Andrew Gunderson added another tally with an unassisted effort. Despite these contributions, the team couldn’t close the gap.
Varsity Game: The varsity team lit up the ice with a 5-3 victory over Aquinas. The scoring opened with a short-handed unassisted goal by Calvin Lakowske. Briar Peterson found the back of the net next, with assists from Wyatt Hanna and Ryan Magnuson. Aidan Gunderson kept the momentum going, scoring with an assist from Drew Apicella.
Maddux Alvarez then showcased his offensive prowess with two goals—one assisted by Drew Apicella and Aidan Gunderson, and the other an empty-netter scored unassisted to seal the win.
It was a well-rounded team effort and an excellent night for the Tigers’ varsity squad, securing an impressive win to cap off the evening. Go, Tigers!

BRF lost a hard-fought battle on January 9 against GET, 75-67. GET jumped out to an early double-digit lead, but BRF went neck-and-neck with GET the rest of the game with their high-energy defense and team-oriented offense!
Cecil Lopez and Braylon Backaus led the way with 22 points each, Mason Meimann with 8 points, Nolan Boehm with 6 points, Archer Grant with 4, Will Sedelbauer with 3, and Lyndon Greengrass with 2 points.

Congrats, Athlete of the Month for volleyball, Amelia Moses! Amelia stepped up in a big way this season, embracing a brand-new role on the volleyball team as the libero. With a determined mindset and relentless effort, Amelia grew into her new position, becoming a key player and leader on the court. Coach Brown stated, “Amelia took on a brand new role this season for volleyball - she transitioned from an outside hitter to a libero. She challenged herself at practice, stayed tough throughout matches, and physically worked hard every day. Amelia led on the court with her positive energy, focus on teamwork and progress each and every day. This leadership on the court and in practice, has her voted as a team captain for our upcoming 2025-2026 season.” Congratulations, Amelia, on your well-deserved recognition and for putting the team first every step of the way!


Last night, Black River Falls wrestlers hit the mat in Arcadia for a triangular meet. The team came out with a 54-21 victory over Arcadia and fought hard in a close 34-30 battle against Stanley-Boyd.

BRF played a good first half against Elk Mound because of tough defense in the post and a well-executed motion offense. BRF was down by four points at halftime. In the second half, Elk Mound's 1-3-1 defense and hot shooting changed the game's momentum. The final score was 74-53, Elk Mound with the win.
Braylon Backaus led the way with 17 points, Nolan Boehm with 13, Cecil Lopez with 10, Zaedyn Roseth and Mason Meimann with 4, and Cole Gearing and Lyndon Greengrass with 2.


Last night, the Lady Tigers gave it their all on the court in a hard-fought game against Westby, ending with a score of 62-40. Despite the loss, our team showcased determination, teamwork, and heart every step of the way! Shoutout to Bella Falcon for leading the charge with an impressive 15 points! And a big round of applause for Charlise Tebo, who came off the bench with an amazing effort to score 10 points! 🌟 Let’s continue to cheer on our Lady Tigers as they grow stronger with each game. Let's hear it for Athlete of the Month in soccer, Channing Goldsmith! Channing had a standout debut season, making his mark as the only freshman from Black River Falls on the soccer team. With hard work and determination, Channing earned a varsity starting position, proving his value to the team. Coach Wildenberg shared, “Channing was the only freshman from Black River Falls on our team this year and constantly gave his best. He always is looking to improve and worked his way up to a varsity starting position. He is a valuable player on our team and we are glad to have him!” Congratulations, Channing, on an incredible season!


Here's a shout out for Athlete of the Month for girls tennis, Libby Moldenhauer!
Libby has proven herself to be a leader both on and off the court. Libby has honed her skills through dedication and hard work to become an outstanding tennis player. As a team captain, she led by example, inspiring her teammates to strive for improvement. Coach Rukavina noted, “Libby is an excellent tennis player who has achieved her level of tennis through hard work and repetition in season and out of season. As a captain, her leadership helped set a great example for other players that would like to improve for the next season.” Well done, Libby, and thank you for your leadership!

Congratulations to Athlete of the Month for girls golf, McKenzie Apicella! McKenzie has made an incredible impact on the girls golf team in her very first season. Competing in the 2-spot as a freshman, McKenzie showed remarkable composure and resilience, even in challenging moments. Coach Danielson shared, “Golfing in the 2-spot as a freshman is an accomplishment. It can be stressful and frustrating, but she kept her cool and fought through the tough times.” Congratulations, McKenzie, on an impressive start to your high school golf career!

We’re excited to recognize Owen Zenz as our Athlete of the Month for cross country! Coach Steve Markee had this to say about Owen:
“Owen is a great leader and good friend to runners on his team. He has shown great leadership to our younger runners and is just a positive kid we love having in our program. He has dealt with illness and injuries over the past several seasons and still pushes himself as hard as he can. He did a lot of extra work in the weight room this past year to get stronger and help with injuries.”
Owen’s commitment, resilience, and positive attitude are a huge asset to the team. Despite facing challenges, he continues to inspire those around him!

“Ava really came out of her shell and stepped up as a leader and captain as the season progressed. Despite a rocky start to the year, she continued to work hard and be there for her team. She also choreographed the senior night halftime routine, and it was beautiful! We are so proud of her and the work she has put in over the last four years!”
